They are quite strict in California. I wore a "Peter Pan"outfit once and some horrendously rude lady told me to go back and change. It was a green v-neck shirt, tights, waist belt and brown boots with my Peter hat. And then I went and changed into shorts. And they still told me no. I couldn't believe how rude they were. It was horrible. APPARENTLY, they have toned down a bit...but I haven't tried since.
That is sad:/ At first I was mad that they would promote being young at heart but not dressing up. But before I left for WDW a follower explained that it was probably a precaution just in case the person in costume misbehaves and people mistake them for being a cast member. That would look bad on Disney and unfortunately those people that misbehave ruined it for everyone.
How did you get away with dressing up as Belle? Every time I turn around, they're saying you're not allowed to at Disney World. I mean, I'd love to dress up as a princess for my birthday in September, but I've been told I'd be turned away at the front gate if I do.
I was weary to dress up but I decided to go for it. I wore the provincial dress from the beginning of Beauty and The Beast and not her ball gown. It looked like a normal dress that so happened to make me look like Belle (there is a picture of it being posted next). I say go for it but make sure it one of their casual dresses and not a ball gown :)
I tried to send this as a reply to your question but it was too long. :) California is VERY strict about this rule. No adults allowed in costumes in Disneyland unless its for the Halloween Party. But I saw multiple Adults dressed up as Disney characters in Florida when I was there this past month and no one seemed to care. Good luck!
